What is aquaponics?

Aquaponics is a sustainable farming method that is like a natural ecosystem. In
an aquaponics farm, fish are raised in tanks and their waste provides rich nutrients for the plants. The
plants use these nutrients to grow, and in doing so, they clean the water for the fish. It’s a balanced
eco-friendly system where fish and plants work together in a symbiotic relationship, creating a
sustainable cycle that benefits both.

History of aquaponics

Although Lacroix Aquaponics uses an innovative method of growing here in
Northern Ontario, aquaponics itself as a means of cultivating produce is not new. Its roots can be traced
back thousands of years. The Aztec’s practiced a form of aquaponics in their chinampas, which were
floating gardens used for agriculture. Aquaponics also has Asian roots and has been used for centuries.
Chinese rice farmers would raise fish in their rice patties utilizing the nutrient rich water to fertilize their
crops.

Environmental benefits

Aquaponics offers several environmental benefits including water
conservation, reduced chemical inputs, land use efficiency, smaller foot print, biodiversity preservation,
reduction of food miles.
